Confirmed: Serious knee injury for Gonzalo Perez de Vargas

Gonzalo Perez de Vargas has very likely played his last game for Barca for the time being. After examination, the sudden injury of the goalkeeper proved to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, according to a club statement.

Perez de Vargas had a bad fall when Barca won the weekend game over Bidasoa Irun. While the experienced keeper got help to get off the court and showed signs of severe pain, the initial club statements laid ground to expect the worst.

”Tests carried out on Gonzalo Pérez de Vargas this Monday have confirmed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The goalkeeper will undergo surgery in the coming days”, writes Barca in social media promising further updates after the operation.

The news also chocks Perez de Vargas´s coming club. The 34-year-old starts on a four-year-deal with THW Kiel this summer.

When asked about the newcomer, Kiel´s managing director Viktor Szilagyi commented to the Bundesliga broadcaster Dyn.

– I feel incredibly sorry for him. He has our support and we hope that nothing else is broken and that there is no more bad news, said Szilagyi according to Handball-World.
