Per Johansson steps down as head coach for the Netherlands

Per Johansson took the reigns as head coach of the Netherlands women’s team about 2,5 years ago. But nu it’s official that the Swedish coach has decided to quit his job with immediate effect.

– I feel like I have come to roads end with this mission. The team enters a new cycle with the 2025 World Championship at home, and the 2028 Olympics, and I am not the right coach for that, Per Johansson says till GoHandball.

Since Per Johansson took the reigns as coach for the Netherlands the team has once again gotten closer to the top after a couple of tough years. But the coach won’t continue and therefore the 2024 Olympics in Paris was his last championship with the team.

– We have finished 5th in 3 straight championships: in the Euros, World Championship, and Olympics. And during 2,5 years we have cemented our position as the big challenger for medals. At the same time, we have worked hard with our young prospects, and I believe that that mix will be the reward for this team, says Johansson.

– I feel proud of my time as a coach over these creative players who in their strongest moments have played an incredibly enjoyable and effective handball. But now it’s time for me to move on.

Johansson’s decision also means that he can put all of his focus on his job as head coach for Györi.
