A few weeks after Thorir Hergeirsson´s decision to resign, the national federation of Norway announces a successor. The name was first revealed by several media outlets: Ole Gustav Gjekstad.
Hergeirsson achieved tremendous success with 16 medals in 15 years. The European Championships in December will allow a final farewell before Gjekstad enters the project.
Having won three Champions League trophies with Vipers Kristiansand and one with Larvik, Gjekstad provides vital input from the club world.
– It is a privilege and an honour to coach the Norwegian national team. Thorir and his gang have delivered fantastic results over a long period of time, so there will be big shoes to fill. I look forward to working with the tasks and complexity that surrounds a national team, he says to handball.no.
Norway presents a somewhat different approach to the national team organization than other prominent countries.
The coach carries responsibility for the junior teams as well as handling the budget. As a special solution, Gjekstad will work both for the federation and his current club (Odense HB) until the end of the 2024/25.
His contract lasts until 2029, according to the federation´s website.
