The International Handball Federation has officially awarded two major upcoming events during the first IHF Council meeting held at the federation’s newly opened headquarters in Basel.
Spain has been selected to host the 2026 IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship, while Morocco will organise the inaugural IHF Women’s U16 World Championship later the same year.
The wheelchair world championship will take place in Granollers from 14–21 September 2026. It will be the first time the tournament is staged in Europe after previous editions were hosted in Egypt.
Meanwhile, Morocco will host the first-ever Women’s U16 World Championship in Agadir in October 2026. The tournament is part of the IHF’s continued expansion of youth competitions and follows the launch of the Men’s U17 World Championship last year.
The decisions were announced during the inaugural council meeting at the newly opened IHF House in Basel, Switzerland. The federation officially inaugurated the new headquarters earlier this month in the presence of IHF president Hassan Moustafa and former IOC president Thomas Bach.
