He became a global sensation during the 2021 World Championship in Egypt, where his powerful presence on the line and infectious smile made headlines around the world. Now, almost five years later, Gauthier Mvumbi is ready to tell his story in his own words. The Congolese line player has written his autobiography – a book about resilience, belief, and the human side of sport.
– I wanted to explain the meaning of doubt, fear, and the choices we make in life, Mvumbi tells GoHandball.
When Gauthier Mvumbi burst onto the world stage in 2021, he did so with a mix of power, finesse, and charisma rarely seen in handball. The comparisons to Shaquille O’Neal came instantly – and so did the fame. Overnight, the French-born Congolese pivot was known as “Handball’s Shaq” and “The Congolese Colossus”.
Nearly five years later, the viral fame has faded, but Mvumbi’s story has grown deeper. Today, he’s using his platform to inspire others through his upcoming book – a project that, according to him, has been both personal and emotional.
“I wanted people to understand what’s behind the headlines”
– Yes, I wrote a book, says Mvumbi with a proud smile. It’s my autobiography. It’s about my whole life – not just handball, but everything that shaped me.
In the book, he opens up about what he calls “the doubts, the fears, and the meaning of life”.
– I wanted to make people understand the importance of certain things – in sport and in life. Every athlete faces moments of uncertainty, and I want my story to help others see that it’s normal. I hope readers can find strength in that.
A long recovery – and the same motivation
Since his famous World Championship appearance, Mvumbi has continued to play in France, representing Rouen Handball in the third national division. But the last year has been far from easy.
– I haven’t played for almost a year now because I tore my quadriceps tendon. It was a serious injury that kept me off the court for a long time. But recovery is going well – I’ll be back in a few months.
Despite the setback, his love for the game hasn’t changed.
– My motivation is still the same. I haven’t changed as a person. Even after going viral, I stayed true to who I am. The only thing I want now is to play again.
“That World Championship changed my life”
When asked about his best memories from Egypt 2021, Mvumbi’s face lights up.
– The atmosphere, the energy – it was incredible. Playing in a World Championship, meeting amazing players, representing my country… It was just pure joy.
The experience changed his life – but also gave him a new sense of purpose.
– The attention was mostly positive. I gained visibility, sponsors, and opportunities. But more than that, I realized I could use my story to inspire others.
Changing perceptions of body types in sport
One of the most powerful aspects of Mvumbi’s story has been the way he challenged traditional ideas about what an elite athlete should look like.
– I think my story touches people who don’t fit the standard boxes, he says. They see that it’s possible for them too. If I can be a source of inspiration for young athletes – or anyone – that makes me very happy.
He laughs when asked what defenders fear most when they face him.
– My weight! That’s my weapon. They know it’s going to be a long game – block after block, contact after contact. It’s not easy for them, believe me.
“Believe in yourself – and never stop dreaming”
Through the book and his message, Mvumbi hopes to reach young people who struggle to find their place in sports or in life.
– Live your dreams, believe in yourself, and never give up. I’ve faced defeats, injuries, and judgment, but I never stopped believing. That’s my real victory.
If he could go back in time to speak to his younger self before that first World Championship, his advice would be simple:
– Enjoy it. You’re about to live something incredible. Stay who you are – it’s enough.
Giving back to the game
Looking ahead, Mvumbi wants to use his experience to help others.
– I want to organize camps around the world, especially in Africa, to give young people a chance to discover handball. Everything handball has given me, I want to give back. I want to pass on that love for the game.
And for those who want to know more about the man behind the viral sensation?
– Well, pre-order the book, he says with a laugh. You’ll find out a lot more about me there.
