Wednesday delivered an action-packed evening in the race for places at the 2027 World Championship in Germany. While some of Europe’s giants flexed their muscles, fans were also treated to thrilling nail-biters in both Austria and Greece.

Five games – five different scenarios. With qualification spots on the line, the intensity was evident across all five matches. From dominant performances by title contenders to dramatic late-game turnarounds, the evening showcased both the depth and unpredictability of European handball.

Norway dominated from the start

Norway showed no mercy at home against Turkey. After an opening phase where Turkey managed to keep pace, the Norwegians completely took control of the game. With the score at 23–21 early in the second half, Norway shifted gears and pulled away to secure an emphatic 43–30 victory.

It was a statement performance that signals Norway will be a serious contender moving forward.

Poland claimed victory in a tight battle

The clash between Austria and Poland was every bit as close as expected. Poland started strongest and held a four-goal lead during the first half, but a determined Austrian side fought its way back into the game.

The teams stayed neck and neck down the stretch in a tense encounter. In the end, Poland edged it 26–25 and secured two hugely important away points.

But Greece refused to give in. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Greeks mounted another comeback and eventually claimed a dramatic 29–27 victory after a heroic finish.

Switzerland held off Italy

Switzerland came out strong and quickly established control against Italy. Although the Italians closed the gap several times during the second half, Switzerland managed to respond every time the visitors threatened a comeback.

Keeping their composure throughout, the Swiss eventually secured a solid 32–29 win in a game where they consistently looked slightly stronger.
