Icelandic handball icon Aron Pálmarsson has taken the next step in his coaching career after being appointed as the new head coach of FH’s men’s team.
The announcement was made during a press conference at FH’s home arena in Kaplakriki, according to Icelandic outlet Handkastið.
Pálmarsson replaces Sigursteinn Arndal as head coach, with the pair effectively swapping roles. Arndal, who guided FH to the Icelandic championship in 2024 and recently signed a new three-year contract with the club, will continue as assistant coach.
The appointment comes as a surprise to many in Icelandic handball. When Pálmarsson joined FH’s coaching staff as an assistant in February, it followed several public statements in which he had insisted that coaching was not part of his future plans.
However, the former Iceland international quickly became an influential figure on the bench. According to Handkastið, Pálmarsson played a major role in shaping FH’s attacking play during the second half of the season and was heavily involved in tactical decisions during matches.
FH came agonisingly close to winning the Icelandic title this season but were defeated by Valur in the deciding championship match, conceding the decisive goal in the final seconds. The club also finished second in the Olís League standings.
