Győri takes league lead after defeating FTC

Győr is now very close to securing another league title. On Saturday, the team defeated their rivals FTC-Rail Cargo 32–24, taking over the top spot in the standings.
– I’m happy, but I’m not celebrating yet, said Győr’s head coach Per Johansson after the win to Nemzeti Sport.

Heading into the match, FTC-Rail Cargo was leading the Hungarian league by one point. At halftime in this top-of-the-table clash, things looked promising for the league leaders, who held a 14–13 advantage.

– The break felt strange because we were trailing by one goal, even though it didn’t really feel like that, Johansson said on the club’s website.

In the second half, FTC stood no chance. Győr shifted into high gear, thanks in large part to an outstanding performance from Dione Housheer, who scored nine goals. Midway through the half, the home side pulled away decisively. Győr scored eight unanswered goals and, with just over ten minutes remaining, held a six-goal lead.

FTC never managed to get back into the game, and Győr ultimately secured a 32–24 victory. With two matches remaining in the domestic season, Győr now leads the league by one point.

– I am proud of the team – we played really well. This time, we played with a bit more aggression, our offensive play was excellent, and I am proud that we were able to showcase such a creative defensive game, said Estelle Nze Minko after the game.
