Confirmed: Erik Persson joins MT Melsungen after GoHandball report

MT Melsungen have officially confirmed the signing of Swedish right back Erik Persson, more than a month after GoHandball reported that the Bundesliga rivals were close to an agreement.

MT Melsungen have announced that Erik Persson will join the club from FRISCH AUF! Göppingen ahead of the 2027/28 season. The 28-year-old Swede has signed a contract until June 2029 and will move on a free transfer next summer.

As reported by GoHandball and RThandballgermany on September 18, the two parties were already close to reaching an agreement, although a contract had not yet been signed at that point. The deal has now been officially confirmed by the German club.

Persson joined Göppingen from Swedish side Eskilstuna Guif in 2023 and has since established himself in the Bundesliga. The left-hander has scored 350 goals in 115 competitive appearances for Göppingen.

“Erik has a powerful shot, is dynamic and has the physicality required to take responsibility in defence as well,” MT Melsungen sporting director Jesper Larsson said.

The signing is part of Melsungen’s plans to reshape their squad for the coming seasons. The club have also confirmed that Latvian right back Dainis Kristopans will leave when his contract expires at the end of the current season. Persson is expected to form Melsungen’s right-back partnership with Nikolaj Enderleit, who recently extended his contract until 2029.
