Rumour: Erik Persson close to MT Melsungen move

Swedish right back Erik Persson is close to joining MT Melsungen for the 2027/28 season, according to information obtained by GoHandball and RThandballgermany. An agreement is not signed yet, but the two parties are understood to be close to reaching a deal.

Persson, 28, joined FRISCH AUF! Göppingen from Swedish club Eskilstuna Guif in the summer of 2023 and has steadily developed into one of the more reliable right backs in the Bundesliga.

The left-hander has established himself as an important attacking player for Göppingen, using his 1.94-metre frame and powerful shot to consistently cause problems for Bundesliga defences. In the 2025/26 season, Persson scored 112 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances.

His development in Göppingen has also been reflected in the club’s own assessment of the Swede. When Persson extended his contract in October 2024, FRISCH AUF! described him as an important player who was still developing and capable of becoming a top player for the club. The extension was initially set to keep him in Göppingen until the summer of 2027.

A move to Melsungen would therefore represent another step in Persson’s Bundesliga career, and would also add another right-handed option to an already deep backcourt.

For the 2026/27 season, MT Melsungen’s squad includes Nikolaj Enderleit, Dainis Krištopāns and Leander Altena among its right-back options. Enderleit joined Melsungen in the summer of 2026, while Krištopāns is one of the experienced names in the squad.

If the agreement is completed, Persson would be expected to join Melsungen ahead of the 2027/28 season.

For now, however, no contract has been signed. According to information from GoHandball and RThandballgermany, the negotiations are at an advanced stage.
