VfL Gummersbach pulled off a shock victory, handing SG Flensburg-Handewitt their first defeat of the season. Bertram Obling delivered a masterclass in goal, while Nikola Roganovic led the attack with 12 goals.
With Flensburg having dropped just one point all season, Gummersbach knew it would take something special to get a result. And from the very start, Bertram Obling showed he was ready for the challenge.
The goalkeeper produced a series of outstanding saves to get his team going in the opening minutes. At the other end, Alex Dujshebaev and wonderkid Nikola Roganovic shouldered the scoring burden, helping Gummersbach establish a 14–11 lead at half-time.
Flensburg found their attacking rhythm after the break, with star player Simon Pytlick scoring three quick goals. Emil Jakobsen joined in, adding three of his own as the visitors fought their way back into the game, closing the gap to just one goal.
Roganovic responded with a couple of goals of his own, but the momentum appeared to be shifting in Flensburg’s favour. With just over five minutes remaining, Jakobsen levelled the score at 28–28 as Gummersbach began to look shaky.
But when it mattered most, Obling stepped up once again. A series of crucial saves shut down Flensburg’s attack in the closing minutes. Meanwhile, Gummersbach found their rhythm at the other end, with Roganovic scoring his 12th goal to give his side a three-goal lead.
Flensburg launched a late comeback attempt, but ultimately fell one goal short. It was an incredible victory for Gummersbach, who climbed to ninth place in the table.
