Estelle Nze Minko eyes France return after becoming a mother: “I still want to play”

France captain Estelle Nze Minko is taking her comeback step by step after giving birth, but the 35-year-old has not lost her ambition – and a return to the national team remains firmly on her mind.

The Győr back court player has gradually returned to action after her maternity break, including a Champions League meeting with Metz. Now, France coach Sébastien Gardillou plans to bring her back into contact with the national team during their upcoming training camp in Hungary.

Speaking to Handnews, Nze Minko stressed that patience is key as she works towards regaining her best form.

“I’m motivated to improve, rediscover my sensations and perform. My mindset is to keep moving forward without rushing the process, but with plenty of ambition,” she said.

Despite having won major titles with France and lifted the Champions League twice, the French star remains hungry for more. She also sees motherhood as a new source of motivation.

“Having already won everything doesn’t mean you no longer want to win. You never get used to it. Winning again as a mother would have a special meaning for me – perhaps an even greater one.”

A return to the national team is still some way off, however. Nze Minko admits she has physical, mental and practical challenges to overcome before she can compete at the highest international level again.

“I still have many steps to take. I need to regain my physical condition, confidence and feel on the court. But does the thought of wearing the blue jersey again cross my mind? Yes.”

France will face Hungary in Győr on 22 October and Strasbourg on 25 October. Nze Minko is expected to train alongside the squad, although this does not constitute confirmation of her return to competitive international action.

Her immediate priority remains regaining her level while maintaining a healthy balance with family life.

“The only thing I’m certain of is that I still want to play!”
