New Zealand ready for historic IHF Nations Trophy

A new international competition is about to begin in Oceania as New Zealand hosts the inaugural women’s IHF Nations Trophy from September 10–14.

Seven nations — Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Tahiti — will compete in Wellington, with the tournament also serving as the Oceania Continental Championship.

For the region, bringing seven senior women’s national teams together is a significant achievement. Long travel distances and high costs have traditionally limited the number of international matches available to Oceania’s teams.

New Zealand captain Rowan Moloughney knows that first-hand. Despite representing her country for more than a decade, she has played only around 25 indoor internationals.

“Travel is expensive as we’re all so geographically spread out, so getting seven women’s national teams together is actually a massive thing,” Moloughney said.

The tournament also offers a route to a bigger stage. The winner will qualify for the Asian Women’s Championship, providing an opportunity to test themselves against stronger opposition outside Oceania.

For New Zealand, the ambition is nevertheless clear: win the tournament on home soil while giving a new generation of players valuable international experience.

“This gives us something concrete,” Moloughney said of the tournament’s potential impact on the sport in New Zealand.
