Kevin Møller was the difference-maker on his return to GOG as the hosts beat Skjern 35–29 in the opening round of the Bambuni Herreligaen. While Skjern’s injury-hit squad showed flashes of their potential, GOG looked like the more settled team and deservedly took the points.
The hosts wasted little time establishing control at Arena Svendborg. Lasse Vilhelmsen scored GOG’s first two goals before Hjalte Lykke made it 6–1 after just six and a half minutes, forcing Skjern into an early timeout. Skjern managed to stabilise the game and reduced the deficit to two goals at 12–10, but GOG remained in front throughout the first half and went into the break 16–13 ahead.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Manuel Zehnder and Óli Mittun quickly extended GOG’s advantage to 19–13, and the home side later moved seven goals clear at 22–15. Skjern did respond, scoring five of the next six goals to get back to 23–20, but GOG immediately shut down the comeback.
William Enoch Dalby scored twice in just 32 seconds to restore a five-goal lead, and Skjern never got closer than four goals again. That ability to answer every challenge was perhaps the clearest indication of the difference between the teams on the night. GOG were not flawless, but they consistently had solutions.
Møller the standout performer
Møller was obviously central to that. Returning to the club after several years abroad, the Danish international produced 16 saves and a 38.1 per cent save percentage, providing exactly the kind of stability GOG will have hoped for when bringing him back. Whenever Skjern threatened to build momentum, Møller was there to interrupt it.
At the other end, GOG had plenty of contributors. Vilhelmsen led the scoring with eight goals from 11 attempts, while Lykke added six goals and five assists. Mittun scored four and supplied six assists. Skjern’s Marcus Midtgaard was one of their brightest performers, scoring six goals from eight attempts and adding three assists.
