Denmark’s European Championship campaign has taken a dramatic turn after line player Lukas Jørgensen suffered a severe knee injury in the team’s match against Romania.
Following Sunday’s game, Jørgensen underwent medical imaging on his knee. The results confirmed the worst fears of Denmark’s medical staff: the 26-year-old has torn his anterior cruciate ligament.
This type of injury typically requires surgery and an extensive rehabilitation period, meaning Jørgensen’s tournament is over – and he is also expected to miss the rest of the club season with Flensburg-Handewitt.
Speaking after the diagnosis, Jørgensen described the news as surreal and difficult to absorb:
“It feels a bit unreal right now, and maybe it hasn’t fully sunk in. I know I have a tough road ahead, but I’m grateful that there are no other injuries to the knee.”
With Jørgensen ruled out, the coaching staff has decided not to call up a replacement.
