Carin Strömberg was omitted from Tomas Axnér’s WC squad. But now it is clear that the Nantes player is joining the Swedish squad – as a replacement for the injured Daniela de Jong.
– We are bringing in a player who knows our game inside and out and who also has a lot of championship experience, says Tomas Axnér.
When the WC squad was presented, the two biggest talking points were that Jessica Ryde and Carin Strömberg were rejected. But on Saturday, the national team announced that Strömberg will be called up to join the WC bubble during the day.
This comes as a result of Daniela de Jong being forced to throw in the towel after a fracture she sustained in the match against Cameroon on Thursday night. Something that means that the Valcea-player will miss the remainder of the tournament.
de Jong is thus not available for tonight’s match against Hungary, but Strömberg will not play either. In a press release, the Swedish national team announces that the earliest she can be ready to play is Monday’s meeting with Montenegro, which concludes the Main Round.
– Of course we all feel for Dani, whose championship is now over. We have chosen to call in Carin Strömberg as a replacement. I had a dialogue with Carin in connection with the selection in November and she was then told that she was highly up-to-date for entry if we were to suffer an injury at nine meters. We are getting a player who knows our game inside and out and who also has a lot of championship experience, says the association captain Tomas Axnér on the association’s website.
