Finland took an important step toward the EHF Women’s Euro 2026 on Sunday after defeating Kosovo 29–27 away from home in the second phase of the qualifiers. Finland made history in securing the first points in history for the women’s national team.
The victory completed a perfect week for Finland, who had already beaten Kosovo at home earlier in the week. After another tight battle, the Finnish women secured their second win in the qualification campaign and strengthened their chances of reaching the final tournament.
Finland started the match strongly and controlled the early minutes before the game gradually evened out. Toward the end of the first half, Kosovo gained momentum and managed to build a six-goal lead. Finland responded well in the closing minutes before the break, cutting the deficit to three goals.
Finland managed to close the gap early in the second half and the teams then went almost goal for goal for the rest of the match. In the decisive moments, however, Finland had the final say and turned the game in their favour to secure a win.
The victory keeps Finland firmly in third place in their qualification group, meaning their hopes of reaching the European Championship remain alive. The four best third ranked teams will make it through to the Euros, and with two remaining matches in the qualifications Finland are currently ranked as the third best third ranked team.
