Germany win in Denmark – but TV microphones raise questions over bench privacy

Germany claimed an impressive 26–21 victory over Denmark in the Golden League, strengthening their preparations for the Women’s EHF EURO. However, the result was accompanied by an unusual talking point: television microphones picked up head coach Markus Gaugisch’s instructions from the bench during live play.

Germany produced a strong defensive performance in Odense to defeat the hosts and make a statement ahead of the European Championship, which begins on 4 December.

The World Championship silver medallists established control early, building a 15–10 half-time lead. Goalkeeper Katharina Filter played a key role, making several important saves as Germany frustrated Denmark’s attack.

The second half proved more complicated. Germany struggled to score between the 38th and 46th minutes, allowing Denmark to close the gap to 17–16. However, Gaugisch’s side recovered and ultimately secured a five-goal victory.

According to Bild, the broadcast also captured conversations from the German bench thanks to television crew members positioned close to the coaching areas with large parabolic microphones. This allowed viewers to hear Gaugisch’s comments during the match, even when no timeout had been called.

The unusual setup raises questions about how much tactical communication between coaches and players should be accessible to television audiences during live matches.

Germany will continue their Golden League campaign against the Netherlands as preparations for the EURO gather pace.
