The 2024 European Championship is getting closer, and in a series of articles Ola Selby, reporter at GoHandball, picks his 5 best players at each position. Now it’s time for the right wings.
Here are the players:
Angela Malestein, Netherlands
A player who has been a goal guarantee in both club teams and national teams for a hell of a lot of years. Experienced, confident, and often at her best when it matters the most. Will be a key player for Henrik Signell’s national team at the European Championship as the Netherlands try to get back into the medal matches.
Trine Østergaard, Denmark
Still really good, not least in the defensive game where Østergaard is a master at reading situations correctly to either set up an offensive foul or to steal the ball and counter a goal.
Alicia Toublanc, France
Was selected in the All Star Team during the last Olympics and there is no doubt about the high level Toublanc possesses. Will probably be the given first choice for France on the right wing also during the EC and will be just as stable as usual.
Nathalie Hagman, Sweden
It could be argued that Hagman scores the majority of her goals against “bad” teams, but no one can take away from the Valcea player that she is still pouring in goals. Hagman won the scoring title during the Olympics, finished seventh at the last WC, and fifth during EC 2022. Will be even more important for Sweden in Mathilda Lundström’s absence.
Wiktoria Györi-Lukacs, Hungary
An experienced player approaching 30 years of age who has played Champions League handball for basically her entire career. Both underrated and sometimes forgotten, but rarely has a bad game. Obviously want to bring home a medal for Hungary during this home championship.
