The European Championship 2024 is getting closer, and in a series of articles Ola Selby, reporter at GoHandball, picks his 5 best players at each position. First out: The goalkeepers.
Here are the players:
Johanna Bundsen, Sweden
She was, incredibly, not named the best goalkeeper of the Olympics. Has she slowed down in her new club, Ludwigsburg? No. Bundsen has saved by far the most shots of all goalkeepers in the Champions League during the season.
Laura Glauser, France
No, Bundsen didn’t take home the award for best goalkeeper of the Olympics; it was Laura Glauser who did. Glauser often needs a good start to the match to deliver. But if Glauser gets off to a good start, she is almost impossible to score on. There is nothing wrong with her ceiling or with a fairly uneven goalkeeper whose ability to deliver in important matches.
Katrine Lunde, Norway
Speaking of the ability to be the best at the biggest stage…Katrine Lunde is still the best. She had the best save percentage of all goalkeepers during the Olympics, and although she has been matched sparingly during the season in Vipers, she has been terrific when she has played. The most impressive fact? That Lunde STILL has that burning desire to win after winning everything there is several times over.
Althea Reinhardt, Denmark
When Jesper Jensen leaving Sandra Toft out of the EC squad, Althea Reinhardt will most likely be the first choice for the Danes. Admittedly, Anna Kristensen has probably been better during the autumn, but Reinhardt has the championship experience. And she is still getting better and better with each passing season.
Silje Solberg, Norway
Played a lot for Vipers during the season and did really well. In fact, Solberg is among the best when it comes to saving percentage among all goalkeepers in the Champions League this season. Together with Lunde, Solberg forms the EC’s best goalkeeper pair, together with France’s Glauser and Sako and Denmark’s Reinhardt and Kristensen.
