The coach change in Györ were one of the focal points in the handball news last week. The Hungarian giant has now completed the process – Per Johansson will become head coach for the rest of the season, according to the club webpage.
After the loss in the cup final, when Ferencvaros consolidated its status as much more than a challenger to Györ’s domestic regime, the club management decided to change personnel in the trainer roles.
Ulrik Kirkely and assistant Kristian Danielsson had to go. The question of the successor was open for a handful of days, before Györ opted for an international name.
Johansson continues in the role of national coach for the Netherlands. From March 24, there will also be full focus on getting Györ in good shape – ahead of and during the season’s obvious goal in the Champions League.
– It is never easy to change coaches during the season, neither for the club nor for the new coach. During my coaching career I have already been in a similar situation and I think that experience will help me now.
– I know the team well, Györ has one of the world’s strongest squads and it will be an experience to work with these players.
– I had an honest and straightforward discussion with the club’s management and we agreed that at the moment we are only thinking about working together this season, says Johansson to the club website.
In addition to his national team assignments, Johansson has also coached CSM Bucharest and Rostov-Don in the Champions League. The Russian team was the 53-year-old Swede´s last club job, until march 2022.
