Official: Janus Smárason to join FC Barcelona

The Icelandic playmaker has signed a three-year deal with the Catalan giants, set to bolster the squad from the 2026/2027 season.

FC Barcelona has officially confirmed the signing of Janus Daði Smárason. The 31-year-old Icelandic international will join the club from Hungarian side Pick Szeged on a contract that runs until the summer of 2029.

Smárason, widely regarded as one of the most versatile and intelligent playmakers in European handball, is expected to fill the void left by Domen Makuc, who is departing for THW Kiel.

A proven winner

The move to Barcelona marks another prestigious chapter in Smárason’s career. After making a significant impact at SC Magdeburg—where he played a crucial role in their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns—and later at Pick Szeged, the Icelander brings a wealth of experience to Palau Blaugrana.

His resume includes stints at Aalborg, Frisch Auf Göppingen, and Kolstad IL, making him a seasoned veteran of the EHF Champions League.

“The biggest club in the world”

Speaking on the transfer, Smárason expressed his excitement about joining the reigning Champions League winners:

– It was not a difficult decision when Barça called. It is probably the biggest club in the world, and it is an honor for me to become part of this family, Smárason stated.

– I hope to bring my strength and mentality to a team that is already incredibly successful.

In Barcelona, Smárason will reunite with fellow Icelandic international, goalkeeper Viktor Hallgrímsson, as well as his former Magdeburg teammate Sergey Hernández.

Strategic reinforcement

For Barcelona head coach Carlos Ortega, the signing of Smárason provides a “chess master” on the court. Known for his tactical discipline, explosive 1-on-1 capabilities, and ability to set up his teammates, the Icelander is seen as the perfect fit for Barça’s fast-paced transition game.

With this signing, FC Barcelona continues to solidify its roster, ensuring they remain the team to beat both in the Liga Asobal and on the European stage.
