Jesper Jensen to leave FTC early – could a return to Esbjerg be on the cards?

Jesper Jensen will leave Ferencváros at the end of the season, one year before his contract was due to expire. With the Danish coach set to return home, speculation is already mounting over a possible comeback to Team Esbjerg.

Jensen joined FTC in the summer of 2025 after stepping down as Denmark’s national team head coach. He had originally signed a contract with the Hungarian powerhouse until the summer of 2027.

However, the 48-year-old has now asked to leave the club a year early for family reasons.

“I’m happy to live in Budapest, and I’m happy to work at Ferencváros, but my family needs me. That’s why I asked the club if I could leave a year before my contract expires,” Jensen said in a statement.

Jensen will therefore return to Denmark next summer – and the timing immediately raises an interesting question.

His former club, Team Esbjerg, will also be looking for a new head coach after this season. Tomas Axnér recently confirmed that he will leave the Danish powerhouse to focus fully on his role as head coach of Sweden.

Jensen spent seven seasons in charge of Esbjerg between 2017 and 2024, winning the Danish championship and establishing the club as one of the leading teams in European women’s handball.

Could he now return?

Nothing has been confirmed, and Team Esbjerg has not indicated that Jensen is their preferred candidate. In fact, the club’s search for Axnér’s replacement is only beginning. However, Jensen’s decision to return to Denmark has inevitably fuelled speculation, particularly given his history with the club.

Danish reports have already identified Jensen as one of the leading candidates for the position, with TV 2 SPORT experts suggesting that a return to Esbjerg could make sense.

For now, Jensen’s only confirmed plan is to leave FTC and return home.

But with Axnér departing Esbjerg at the same time, the possibility of a reunion is certainly one to watch.
