Robert Hedin has stepped down from his role as head coach of the USA men’s national handball team. The reason, according to Handball Woche, is that the federation has run out of money.
– The association has been operating completely unprofessionally, Hedin told the magazine.
Since it was announced that the 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, the USA has launched a handball initiative. One of the project’s key pillars has been Robert Hedin, the men’s national team coach since 2018.
However, it is now clear that the Swede is leaving the role.
– The federation needs to reorganize as quickly as possible. There’s been a lot of talk over the past seven years, but nothing has happened, Hedin told the German magazine Handball Woche, according to Team Handball News.
According to the magazine, the national teams have had to finance themselves entirely, and Hedin says that many of the players are students who must pay for their own travel.

The final straw appears to have been when the federation cut funding for a training camp. Sponsorship money was needed to cover the federation’s outstanding bills. The magazine also reports that the IHF (International Handball Federation) has paused its support for the project due to financial irregularities within the federation.
– The federation has acted completely unprofessionally since the new CEO took office, Hedin said.
