One of Spain’s most decorated players of the modern era is heading home. According to HandNews, Jorge Maqueda will return to Spanish handball next season after agreeing to join Caserío Ciudad Real, bringing an end to a remarkable 14-year journey across Europe.
The 38-year-old right back arrives from Polish giants Industria Kielce and will play in the Liga ASOBAL for the first time since leaving BM Aragón in 2012. Caserío Ciudad Real, who finished eighth in the Spanish top flight this season, continue to strengthen an ambitious project with the addition of one of the country’s most experienced players.
Maqueda’s career has taken him through some of Europe’s biggest clubs. After leaving Spain, he played for HBC Nantes, RK Vardar, Pick Szeged, Telekom Veszprém, Nantes again, and Kielce, collecting domestic trophies across multiple countries and winning the EHF Champions League with Vardar in 2017.
On the international stage, Maqueda was a key member of Spain’s golden generation. He helped the Hispanos win the 2013 World Championship on home soil, claimed two European Championship titles and earned Olympic bronze medals before retiring from international handball in 2024 after more than 200 appearances for the national team.
For Caserío Ciudad Real, the signing is about more than just production on the court. The club is adding leadership, experience and a player who has spent more than a decade competing at the highest European level.
