FC Barcelona have secured the long-term future of head coach Carlos Ortega, with the 55-year-old signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2031.
The extension means Ortega is set to complete a full decade on the Barça bench after taking over in 2021. It is a remarkable show of faith in a coach who has already delivered one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Under Ortega, Barcelona have won three EHF Champions League titles in five seasons, including the 2025/26 edition. The team has also collected five Liga ASOBAL titles, five Copa del Rey trophies and five Supercopa Ibérica titles during his tenure.
Last season was particularly historic. Barcelona won all seven competitions they entered, matching an achievement previously accomplished only in 1999/00 and 2014/15.
Ortega’s personal record is equally remarkable. A former Barcelona player between 1994 and 2005, he now has nine European titles to his name, six won as a player and three as a coach, making him the only person to have reached that figure.
The club has also highlighted the role of its academy during Ortega’s tenure. Eleven of the 22 players who represented Barça in the most recent Liga ASOBAL campaign came through the club’s youth system.
“I’m at the best club in the world and I couldn’t be better anywhere else,” Ortega said after signing his new deal.
The new contract ensures that the Barcelona project will remain firmly in Ortega’s hands for the next five seasons.
