RUMOR: Benfica signs Nordic trio for next season

Portuguese giants SL Benfica are reportedly preparing a massive overhaul of their squad. Sources indicate that the Lisbon-based club is targeting a “Nordic Trio” of high-profile internationals to lead their charge in the 2026 season.

As the handball world looks toward the 2026 campaign, SL Benfica appears ready to make a significant statement on the European stage. Under the guidance of Swedish head coach Jörgen Hanisch, the “Eagles” are rumored to be finalizing moves for three key players from top European leagues, strengthening their roster from the goal line to the backcourt.

Swedish goalkeeper and a young talent

The headline move involves Swedish international goalkeeper Tobias Thulin. Currently guarding the net for Hungary’s Pick Szeged, Thulin has evolved into one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in the EHF Champions League.

A move to Lisbon would see him reunite with coach Hanisch, providing Benfica with the elite-level goalkeeping necessary to compete for major European silverware.

On the right back position, Benfica is reportedly eyeing the rising Swedish star Kasper Palmar. Currently playing for Danish side Fredericia HK, the 21-year-old Palmar has been a revelation in the Danish league.

Known for his physical presence and powerful left- handed shot, he represents the next generation of top-tier right backs and would be a long- term investment for the Portuguese side.

Experience from Paris Saint Germain

Completing the trio is Norwegian left wing Sindre Heldal. The 27-year-old is currently under contract with French powerhouse PSG Handball. Bringing a wealth of experience from the highest level of French and international handball, Heldal would provide Benfica with lethal efficiency on the counter-attack and tactical maturity on the wing.

If these transfers materialize, it signals a clear shift in the European hierarchy. By poaching talent from established giants like PSG and Pick Szeged, Benfica is positioning itself as a destination for top-tier internationals.
