Confirmed: Kristian Olsen transfers to SL Benfica

Kristian Olsen had a strong season with Ystads IF, initially deciding to step away from professional handball to focus on his civilian career. But after a change of heart, he’s now set to continue his handball journey — and the persistent rumors from this spring have proven true: the reliable right back is joining SL Benfica.

Benfica’s announcement of the 25-year-old Dane doesn’t come as a major surprise to the handball audience. His impressive performances in the European League and key contributions during the Swedish Championship playoffs already suggested that he was ready for a move to a bigger club.

Originally, Olsen had planned to focus on his studies, but by late spring, he had shifted his sights toward an international career instead.

– I feel really good. It’s fantastic to be here, and I’m looking forward to getting started, Olsen said in a video interview on the club’s website.

Before his season with Ystads IF, Olsen had stints with Fredericia HK (2018–2022) and Nordsjælland Håndbold (2022–2024).
