The 2025 Men’s World Championship is getting closer and in a series of articles Ola Selby, reporter at GoHandball, picks his 5 best players at each position. It’s time for the left wings.
Here are the players:
Hampus Wanne, Sweden
Wanne hasn’t had a completely uncomplicated autumn with a few injury problems, but when he has played he has usually been really sharp. Is Wanne as good now as when he came to Barcelona a few years ago? Many would probably say that he is not. But I think he is at least as good as he was then – the difference is that he doesn’t play as much as in Flensburg. A top player who is extremely important for Sweden.
Emil Jakobsen, Denmark
Has poured in goals for Flensburg during the season, just as he usually does, in other words. When it comes to playing in the club team, Jakobsen is undoubtedly one of the best in the world at his position, if not the best. In the national team, he is still waiting for THAT performance in a really big match. Maybe it will come during the World Championship.
Hugo Descat, France
Was really good for his France team during the Olympics, and one of the few players who seemed to get better from the crowd support and pressure instead of collapsing under it. Guaranteed goals from his wing and also a top-notch morale raiser.
Daniel Fernandez, Spain
Perhaps surprisingly, he was named the best left winger at the Olympics. Fernandez poured in goals and showed that Spain never stops producing talented wingers. Ridiculously fast and still underrated in my book, but deserving of a place on this list.
Magnus Landin, Denmark
The competition at left wing is not the strongest right now, but Landin is on the list in thanks to his huge importance for Denmark in the defensive part of the game. And he always delivers in the big games.
