Gidsel: “I’m totally done”

He won the gold medal. He was the top scorer. And he was the MVP. Now he is totally done.

Mathias Gidsel has taken the handball world and this sport with storm. Since his international breakthrough in the 2021 World Championship he has never looked over his shoulder and he just keeps accelerating. In the 2024 Olympic Games he was the MVP, the top scorer and won the gold medal with Denmark. Now, he need some rest.

– Physically I’m totally done, there is not more left like it has to be, he said to Gohandball after the game.

– Emotionally it was a big moment after the game. I have struggled a bit the last three games, finding the right pace, finding the right level and maybe I was a too tired.

– But realising playing for gold medal, going from silver which was a big disappointment in Tokyo, to the biggest medal in the world of sports means a lot of course.

The fact that he has been in the All-Star Team for six Championships in a row only showcased his humble personality when describing his feelings.

– I feel like I am a part of the best team in the World. We show how good we are always being part of the last games in all tournaments. I am just trying to enjoy and contribute as good as I can in every game and of course I am also proud of being there again.

– I’m just a proud guy.

Only one other player has done this six-in-a-row-streak: Ivano Balic. Gidsel is almost lost for Words when being presented to hard facts but concludes.

– Of course that is a big guy to be compared to so I am proud but mostly proud of being part of this team.
