New attendance world record on the way at Santiago Bernabéu?

The current world record for handball attendance was set in Düsseldorf during the 2024 Men’s European Championship. Now, a new world record could be on the horizon, as Real Madrid’s home arena, Santiago Bernabéu, is reportedly being considered as a venue for a handball match.

According to the Instagram account Upskill Handball, the European Handball Federation (EHF) recently inspected arenas in Spain and Portugal and took a look at the legendary arena in Madrid.

Upskill Handball reports that the goal is to surpass the current handball attendance record of 53,000, which was set during the Men’s EHF EURO 2024 in Düsseldorf. Santiago Bernabéu has a seating capacity of 84,000 for football matches.

The Men’s EHF EURO 2028 will be hosted in Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland.
