Iker Romero takes over Austria

Austria has appointed a new coach for the men’s national team. The trend with Spanish trainers at international level continues, ÖHB has chosen Iker Romero to develop Austria.

Romero is currently in charge of SG BBM Bietigheim in Bundesliga. The contract with the Austrian federation means the 44-year-old will have double duties for the upcoming season.

From 2026 and onwards the role with Austria requires Romero´s full attention for two years.

– Taking over the Austrian national team is a great honor for me. Since our first conversation, all I’ve been thinking about is the first training session and the first game with the guys. Things are going really well for the national team right now, says the icon who won many medals playing 200 caps for his native country to the federation website.

Under Ales Pajovic´s lead, Austria moved up on the ranking with eight place in Euro 2024.

– Our major shared goal is to continue on the successful path we’ve embarked on. We are convinced that Iker Romero will further develop our team to create many more unique moments for Austrian handball and the fans of the national team. The 2028 Olympics is a dream we would like to realize with the men’s team, says ÖHB President Markus Plazer after announcing the deal with Romero.
