IHF Emerging Nations is an eight country-affair for a looming title. The first match day saw a tie between USA and Nigeria while Moldova, Bulgaria and Great Britain all cruised to huge margin-wins.
The group stage got underway in the seaside resort of Varna with the host nation Bulgaria among the two-point-teams. Bulgaria defeated Paraguay 35–18 after twelve goals from Svetlin Dimitrov and prepare for the European duel versus Great Britain.
Great Britain had a similar attacking start and ran away from Cyprus, 37–23 with Francisco Pereira and Sebastian Vellenoweth as supreme goal contributors (seven each).
In group B Moldova secured a triumph, including a comeback after 0–3 to a convincing lead already at half-time (14–8). Azerbaijan had a lot of problem finding the net behind Ion Saharnean and the goalkeeper ruled with 21 saves overall.
The winning teams seem on course for top two and semifinal spot, while USA and Nigeria will need to show further strength after their opening tie, 31–31. The squad of USA doesn’t present as much experience as the World Cup lineup, even a six goal-lead half way wasn’t enough to stay ahead.
Nigeria fought back via Faruk Yusuf in goal mode and USA had to act quick in the end to avoid defeat. Amar Amitovic fixed the final result on a last minute-penalty.
The championship continues with group games Wednesday and Thursday.
