Ambros Martín takes over Qatar: Former Győri coach faces new challenge in men’s handball

Qatar have appointed Spanish coach Ambros Martín as their new men’s national team head coach, handing one of the most decorated coaches in women’s handball a new challenge ahead of the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship.

The Qatar Handball Association confirmed the appointment on Monday, 2 November. Martín replaces Veselin Vujović, who guided Qatar to silver at the 2026 Asian Games. Martín will combine his new national team responsibilities with his position as head coach of Qatari club Al-Duhail, which he took over in February 2026.

The 58-year-old Spaniard arrives with an impressive coaching CV, particularly in women’s handball. He won the EHF Champions League four times with Győri ETO KC, lifting the trophy in 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018. He has also coached the national teams of Romania, Russia and Spain.

His first assignments with Qatar will be two friendly matches against Saudi Arabia this week. The friendlies will provide Martín with an early opportunity to assess his squad, introduce his tactical ideas and build cohesion between experienced players and younger talents.

The biggest challenge, however, is already on the horizon. Qatar will compete at the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship in Germany, where they have been drawn in Group E alongside Sweden, Norway and Greece.
