The Faroe Islands pulled off a historic upset by defeating France 28–27 in a decisive main round match at the U21 World Championship. France were under pressure to win in order to keep their quarter-final hopes alive, but instead, it was the small island nation that came out on top.
France started strong and quickly built an early lead. However, the Faroe Islands clawed their way back into the game, thanks in large part to their star player, Óli Mittún, who orchestrated much of their offense. Mittún finished the match with eight goals and seven assists and was deservedly named Player of the Match.
Despite trailing for most of the second half, the Faroese side managed to take the lead at 28–27 with less than a minute remaining – a lead they held until the final whistle. With their third win of the tournament, the Faroe Islands secured a sensational spot in the quarter-finals, joining fellow Nordic side Denmark.
