Icelandic Women’s league preview: Favorites, Stars & Storylines

The Icelandic league is approaching the start of the season, and with the help of expert Styrmir Sigurðsson we take a closer look at the Women’s league. Who will win the league? Which player will stand out?

Styrmir Sigurðsson is a 38 year old long retired handball player. He has been covering handball as part of the Handkastið the podcast for the last 5-6 years where they record 2 shows each week about the domestic and foreign league where we have Icelandic players.

Which team will win the league this season and why?
– In the women’s league I believe it will be Valur again. They have lost their coach for the last few years Agust Johansson over to the men’s team and have an unexperienced coach in Anton Runarsson but I don’t think that will be a factor and their dominance over the Icelandic league will continue.

Which player will stand out?
– Sandra Erlingsdóttir just moved back to her childhood team from Germany where she played with TuS Metzingen. This is a huge transfer for the women’s league since Sandra has been one of the key players in the Icelandic national team over the past years. She is coming back after childbirth and the Icelandic league is really lucky to have her back.

Which player will have her big breakthrough?
– Alfa Brá Hagalín Oddsdóttir 21 year old player for Fram. The team as lost many experienced players into retirement over the summer so this will be her team now. She has been around the Icelandic national team the last years and I think this season she will show us what she is capable of.

Which player, team or event will be the most disappointing?
– On the women’s side I’m afraid that this will be a one team division again and the other teams don’t get closer to Valur. So the lack of excitement is my biggest concern for the women’s league this year.
