Győri Audi ETO KC made a winning start to their title defence in the Hungarian league, beating NEKA 37–24 at home on Tuesday evening.
The reigning champions needed some time to settle into their opening game of the season. Győri led 17–12 at half-time before pulling away after the break, eventually securing a 13-goal victory in front of 1,142 spectators at Audi Aréna.
Five players shared the scoring lead for Győri, with Kari Brattset Dale, Helena Elver, Sarah Bouktit and Janka Zákányi all scoring five goals. Thale Rushfeldt Deila and Kíra Kriston added four each. NEKA’s biggest threat was Fanni Jelena, who finished the game with eight goals, while Laura Himer contributed five.
The result gives Győri an ideal start to a season in which the club will once again compete on two fronts domestically and in the Champions League. The Hungarian champions will begin their European campaign away to Podravka Vegeta on Saturday.
