Thibaud Briet to join SC Magdeburg in 2028

SC Magdeburg have announced the signing of French international Thibaud Briet, with the left back set to join the reigning German champions from the 2028/29 season.

The 26-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Magdeburg and will arrive from HBC Nantes, where he has been under contract since 2019. Briet developed through the Nantes system after spending three seasons with Rouen HB before breaking into the first team and establishing himself as a France international.

Briet made his senior international debut for France in 2022 against Germany and has since become part of a national team that has collected medals on the international stage. At club level, he has helped Nantes win two French Cups, the Trophée des Champions and the League Cup, while also reaching the EHF Champions League FINAL4 twice.

SC Magdeburg coach and sporting director Bennet Wiegert believes Briet’s athleticism, physicality and versatility will make him a strong fit for the club’s playing style.

“Thibaud is a young, dynamic player who already has a lot of experience at the highest level,” Wiegert said in a press release. “His development is far from finished.”

For Briet, the move represents a new chapter in his career and his first experience of the Bundesliga.

“SC Magdeburg have shown in recent years that the club can compete for every title,” Briet said. “That is exactly the level at which I want to continue developing and contribute to the team’s success.”

The Frenchman also singled out Wiegert as an important factor behind his decision, saying that the coach’s vision for Magdeburg’s future particularly impressed him.

Briet will remain with Nantes for the next two seasons before moving to Germany in the summer of 2028.
