VfL Gummersbach are keeping an eye on Sporting CP left wing Orri Freyr Thorkelsson as they consider options for the position, according to reports from Iceland and rthandball.
The 27-year-old Iceland international has established himself as one of Sporting’s key players since arriving from Elverum in 2023. During his time in Portugal, Thorkelsson has won two league titles and two Portuguese Cups, while also becoming a regular contributor in the EHF Champions League. He scored 83 goals in last season’s competition.
Thorkelsson began his senior career with Haukar before moving to Norway, where he won both the Norwegian league and cup with Elverum in 2021/22. His performances have also made him an increasingly important part of Iceland’s national team. At the 2026 EHF EURO, he scored 57 goals as Iceland reached the semi-finals.
According to Icelandic reports, the current season could be Thorkelsson’s last in Lisbon. Gummersbach are among the clubs linked with the winger, although there is no indication that a deal is close at this stage. A move to Gummersbach would also create a particularly strong Icelandic connection.
Head coach Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson is himself a former Icelandic left wing and one of the country’s greatest players. He spent three seasons as a player at Gummersbach before returning to the club as head coach in 2020. Under his leadership, the club has gone from the second tier back to the Bundesliga and finished fourth last season.
Gummersbach already have several Icelandic players in their squad, including Elliði Snær Viðarsson, Teitur Örn Einarsson and Garðar Ingi Sindrason.
Thorkelsson would therefore not only add a proven Champions League performer to Gummersbach’s left wing, but potentially become the latest Icelandic piece in Sigurdsson’s project.
