The reigning champions, Füchse Berlin, started off their new Bundesliga campaign in the best way possible with a commanding 39–27 victory over Bergischer.
Berlin came out firing from the start on opening night. After just a couple of minutes, the home fans had already celebrated five goals, while the away team had only managed one. The game felt almost over right there, but credit to Bergischer, who weathered the storm and slowly but surely worked their way back into the match. At halftime, the lead was down to just three goals: 20–17.
Despite Berlin’s lead, there was a sense that Bergischer were still very much in the game. The away team came out of halftime showing real promise, outscoring Berlin 5–2 and tying the game at 22–22. For a moment, an upset seemed possible.
But from that point on, Berlin showed exactly why they are the reigning champions and completely took control. The home side allowed just five more goals in the remainder of the game while scoring seventeen themselves. The final score was 39–27, an impressive win for Berlin, who sent a strong message to their competitors.
As usual, it was superstar Mathias Gidsel who led the scoring for Berlin. The Dane netted ten goals on fourteen shots.
There were two other matches in the Bundesliga yesterday. Minden and Göppingen shared the points after a 28–28 draw, while Hamburg managed an away victory against Stuttgart.
