THW Kiel´s perennial captain, Patrick Wiencek is ready to end his magnificent career. A total of 13 years in the zebra jersey stops in the summer, which doesn’t mean that the 36 year-old is done in Kiel.
– It was one of the most difficult decisions of my life, but I’m glad I made it now and I’m looking forward to the future, he says to the club webpage.
The pivot Wiencek had developing years in Bergischer HC. Tusem Essen and VfL Gummersbach that made him a handball pro instead of industrial mechanic. Klaus Elwardt and Alfred Gislason, then manager and coach in Kiel convinced Wiencek to the most significant move.
If the first year was rough uphill in the world class-environment Wiencek soon made it into a role as a true team profile. As a team captain since 2018, there has been no doubt about his club motivation.
– I love handball and THW Kiel. It’s hard for me to draw a line under it now. But I’m also a realist, and as such, I know I’m not getting any younger. It was time to weigh up the options. I’ve decided to plan my future off the field, he continues.
Wiencek will officially step off the court after a farewell game on July 25. After a well deserved vacation a job at the club office awaits.
– Patrick is one of the most influential figures in the history of THW Kiel. As a player, he contributed to many of our successes; he represents the values of THW Kiel like no other. We are therefore pleased that he will continue to contribute his qualities and passion for the club in a new role after his active career, says the managing director Viktor Szilagyi to the the club website.
Wiencek has lifted the German championship six times, and leaves with at least four DHB Cups, seven Super Cups, plus international triumph in the 2019 EHF Cup and Champions League 2020.
