Jure Dolenec is one of the greatest Slovenian handball players of all time. Now, after a 21-year-long career, the right back has decided to retire from professional handball.
Dolenec started his career in Slovenia, where he played for two clubs: RD Merkur and RK Velenje. In 2013, he left his home country to join the French side Montpellier. After four very successful years in France, Dolenec earned a move to the European powerhouse FC Barcelona. In Spain, he won four league titles and scored 491 goals in 187 matches.
In 2021, he returned to France, joining Limoges, before rounding out his career back in Slovenia.
On the national stage, Dolenec has been a key figure for the Slovenian team for over a decade, scoring over 700 goals – making him the top scorer in the history of the Slovenian national team. In 2017, he helped the team win a bronze medal at the World Championship. In a statement on Instagram, the Slovenian icon announced that this will be his last season.
– After 21 seasons in senior handball, the time has come to say goodbye. The games in the national championship finals will be the last of my career, says Dolenec on instagram.
