Paulo Pereira takes over Celje

The classic Slovenian club, RK Celje, seeks resources from Portugal to lead the team. Paulo Pereira has signed a two year-contract, according to the club webpage.

Pereira has had full focus on the Portuguese national team since 2019, leading to quality championships both 2020 and 2021.

– Working in Celje is a source of pride for every coach, and I am no exception. I know that I will work in a handball country, with intelligent and attentive people, in a historically important club in Europe, which has the ability to produce handball players of exceptional quality, says Pereira who hope to take Celje on a successful and restoring path.

– We had very good candidates in the selection for the coach, but I believe that we chose the best. All in all, we have a lot of work ahead of us to bring Celje back to the top of Slovenian handball with hard and prudent work, says the club president Gregor Planteu to the club website.

Pereira´s arrival happens just a few weeks after Celje finished third in the domestic league and had to hand over the title to Gorenje Velenje. The Slovenian cup provided no relief as Celje was eliminated already in the quarterfinal stage. The 59-year-old replaces Alem Toskic as Celje coach.
