The invincibles have finally fallen. After 24 consecutive victories, Aalborg Håndbold’s historic run in the Danish Herreligaen came to a screeching halt on Wednesday night. In a high-octane offensive masterclass, Bjerringbro-Silkeborg (BSH) secured a 38–37 victory that will send shockwaves through European handball.
It was the game of the season for the neutrals, but a wake-up call for the league leaders. Aalborg, missing key pieces like Mads Hoxer, looked uncharacteristically vulnerable in defense, conceding a staggering 21 goals in the first half alone.
The match turned into a shootout between two of the league’s premier playmakers. German superstar Juri Knorr led the charge for Aalborg with 8 goals, orchestrating a massive second-half comeback. However, he was matched stride for stride by BSH’s Mads Svane, who also netted 8, consistently shredding the Aalborg defense with pace and precision.
The tactical chess match
Trailing 21–17 at the break, Aalborg coach Simon Dahl pulled the trigger on a goalkeeper change, subbing out legend Niklas Landin for the energetic Fabian Norsten. The move initially looked like a masterstroke. Norsten’s string of crucial saves allowed Sander Sagosen (6 goals) and Thomas Arnoldsen (7 goals) to ignite a comeback that saw Aalborg turn a six-goal deficit into a 34–32 lead with just seven minutes remaining.
At the other end, Marko Roganovic stood tall for BSH, coming up with 8 vital stops to keep the home side within striking distance during Aalborg’s hottest spells.

A final minute of pure chaos
The closing sixty seconds were nothing short of cinematic. With the score locked and the tension at a breaking point, Mads Lenbroch found the back of the net to put BSH up 37–36, leaving Aalborg with one final possession to save their streak.
Opting for a high-risk 7-on-6 attack, Aalborg threw everything forward, and it seemed to pay off when Thomas Arnoldsen found a gap to equalize with only ten seconds remaining on the clock.
However, the celebration was cut short. In the frantic scramble to reset, Aalborg’s goal remained empty as BSH launched a lightning-fast restart. Before the defense could recover, Alexander Lynggaard intercepted a loose ball and launched a long-range missile that sailed across the court and into the open net just as the final siren sounded.
The 38–37 victory was sealed, and the arena erupted as Aalborg’s bid for a perfect regular season officially ended in the most dramatic fashion possible.
The big picture
While the loss is a blow to Aalborg’s pride, it does little to damage their title hopes. They remain 14 points clear at the top of the table and have already secured the regular-season title.
For BSH, however, this win is a massive momentum shifter. By taking down the giants, they have signaled to the rest of the league that they are legitimate contenders heading into the playoffs.
