In the second half, the teams traded goals, pushing the game into overtime. In the second overtime, Spain had built a three-goal advantage, but Germany mounted an impressive comeback to force penalties.
The goalkeepers made several crucial saves during the penalties. Germany converted five of seven penalties, while Spain managed only four, giving Germany the victory and the world champion title.
