Johannes Golla contract dispute takes new twist as legal loophole emerges

Johannes Golla’s attempted exit from MT Melsungen could become a legal battle over the wording of his release clause. SPORT BILD reports that a potential formal error could open another route out of his contract, although no such loophole has been established.

The controversy surrounding Johannes Golla’s future at MT Melsungen has taken another turn, with questions emerging over the wording of the Germany captain’s release clause. Golla only joined Melsungen in the summer of 2026, signing a contract running until 30 June 2031. However, the 28-year-old reportedly wants to return to former club SG Flensburg-Handewitt after struggling to settle in his new surroundings with his family.

According to SPORT BILD, Golla’s contract contains a release clause naming six clubs: FC Barcelona, Industria Kielce, Paris Saint-Germain, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, Rhein-Neckar Löwen and THW Kiel.

The clause reportedly sets the transfer compensation at €500,000 plus VAT and states that the option could first come into effect on 30 June 2028. However, the wording governing when the contract can be terminated has raised questions over how the provision should be interpreted.

Clause could allow a early departure

One possible reading is that the clause could allow a departure earlier than Melsungen expects. SPORT BILD also raises the possibility that a formal error in the fixed-term contract could undermine its validity, potentially allowing termination under different conditions. Neither scenario has been established as a legal outcome. The exact implications of the contract wording remain unclear, and the report does not confirm that Golla has secured a way out of his deal.

SPORT BILD further reports that Golla has already submitted written notice to terminate his contract, although the intended termination date is unknown. The publication also mentions reports circulating within the handball community of a second version of the contract containing revised wording. The situation is complicated by Golla’s public admission that his mental health has been seriously affected. In an Instagram post, the Germany captain explained that his difficulties had gone beyond homesickness.

For Melsungen, the immediate challenge is to resolve the uncertainty surrounding one of its most important players. For Flensburg, the prospect of bringing their former captain back remains tied to the contractual and financial obstacles involved.

The dispute could also have consequences for Melsungen’s recruitment. SPORT BILD reports that negotiations with Swedish talent Axel Månsson, currently at Skjern Håndbold, had progressed considerably, partly because Månsson wanted to play alongside Golla. The Swedish playmaker is now reportedly reconsidering a potential move in light of the situation.
