Mathias Gidsel produced a performance for the history books on Thursday night, scoring 17 goals as Füchse Berlin defeated FC Porto 40–32 in the EHF Champions League.
The Danish superstar equalled a 17-year-old competition record, previously set by Jesús “Chuchi” Martínez de la Cal, who scored 17 goals for Valladolid against PAOK Thessaloniki in November 2009.
Gidsel was virtually unstoppable in Berlin. He scored seven goals in the first half alone, helping the hosts establish a 20–17 lead at the break, before taking his game to another level after the interval. His 14th goal of the night, which made it 32–27, also set a new personal best in the Champions League. Gidsel had previously scored 13 goals in a single match on two occasions during the 2025/26 season.
The 27-year-old finished with 17 goals from 19 attempts, taking his tally to 36 goals in this season’s competition and extending his lead at the top of the scoring charts. Füchse Berlin eventually secured an eight-goal victory, their second win in three matches, and strengthened their position in Group A.
Elsewhere, SAH made history by claiming their first-ever Champions League victory, beating Montpellier 36–32. Aalborg also remained unbeaten with a convincing 33–23 win away to Zagreb, while MT Melsungen handed Nantes their first defeat of the campaign, winning 28–23. Defending champions Barca defeated Dinamo Bucharest, 34–27, and Wisla Plock took care of business against Vardar, winning 32–26.
