Szeged make flying start to Hungarian league season

OTP Bank-PICK Szeged opened their 2026/27 Hungarian league campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 50–24 victory away against newly promoted Eger.

The visitors had the game under control almost immediately and built a 26–10 lead by half-time. Eger never managed to close the gap after the break, with Szeged continuing to punish mistakes and attack quickly in transition.

Mario Sostaric led the scoring with seven goals, while Miklós Rosta and Lukas Sandell both added six. Jérémy Toto, Sebastian Frimmel, Péter Lukács and Dávid Szilágyi each scored four.

The match also marked the league debuts for several of Szeged’s summer arrivals. Nikola Portner, Dmytro Horiha, Sandell, Lukács and Kristóf Csörgő all made their first K&H Liga appearances for the club, while Rosta returned to the Hungarian top flight after three years away.

Szeged’s goalkeeping duo also played a major role in the comfortable win. Roland Mikler started the match strongly, including a save from a seven-metre throw, before Portner took over in the second half. The result extended Szeged’s perfect record against Eger in the Hungarian top flight. The teams have now met 18 times, with Szeged winning every single encounter.

Szeged will next face ETO University Handball at home on September 5, while Eger’s next league fixture is against PLER-Budapest.
