Icelandic Women’s league preview with Styrmir Sigurðsson : “She will once again dominate”

The new season in Iceland is approaching, and GoHandball asked Icelandic handball expert Styrmir Sigurðsson to share his thoughts ahead of the Women’s league season. Sigurðsson backs ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar to dethrone reigning champions Valur and expects Sandra Erlingsdóttir to once again be one of the league’s dominant players.

Which team will win the league this season and why?

– I believe ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar will win the league this season. Valur, the reigning champions, have, like their men’s team, lost a lot of experienced players, while ÍBV have strengthened their squad. However, they lost their goalkeeper to injury at the end of last season, but I believe they will take care of that with a new signing before the season starts. Therefore, ÍBV will be champions this year.

Which players will stand out?

– Sandra Erlingsdóttir (ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar) will once again dominate the women’s league. She returned last season after playing in Germany for a few years, and you could see the quality in her style of play. She now has great wingers on either side of her and will take full advantage of that this season.

Which player will have her big breakthrough?

– Laufey Helga Óskarsdóttir (Valur) is also a huge talent in the women’s league. Born in 2009, she will have more opportunities with Valur since many players left before this season.
