Elvar Örn Jónsson to join Rhein-Neckar Löwen in 2027

Rhein-Neckar Löwen have secured one of the Bundesliga’s most versatile backcourt players, with Elvar Örn Jónsson set to join the Mannheim club in the summer of 2027.

The Icelandic international has signed a four-year contract with the Löwen, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2031. He will arrive from reigning German champions SC Magdeburg, where he has been playing since joining from MT Melsungen in 2025.

The 28-year-old has established himself as an important two-way player in the Bundesliga, capable of contributing both in attack and defence. That versatility is a major part of what attracted the Löwen, with head coach Maik Machulla highlighting Jónsson’s ability to bring pace to the team’s game while also making an impact defensively.

“His defensive qualities and his versatility in attack will accelerate our game,” Machulla said of the signing to the clubs website.

For Jónsson, the move represents another step in a Bundesliga career that began at Melsungen in 2021. He has since developed into an established Iceland international and a valuable player at the highest level of German handball.

The timing of the transfer means Jónsson will remain with Magdeburg for the 2026/27 season before moving to Mannheim. He will therefore have one more season to add to his collection of titles with the reigning German champions.
